Making Everyday Beautiful

A New Adventure

Monday, June 14, 2010

Our family is heading on a new adventure at the end of this summer. One we’re excited for and definitely nervous about.
August 22nd we’ll be packing up our little family of six and everything we can squeeze into 10 suitcases and six carry on bags and moving to the Caribbean island of Sint Eustatius to start Medical school. It’s been a decision that’s taken over a year for us to make but now that it’s a done deal (ie. the house is sold, the business is sold, the plane tickets are booked) it’s impossible not to see that it’s the right thing for our family. Too many little miracles have happened in the last month to make it possible for us to go in September for it not to be right and it’s been a real testimony to us of the power of prayer.
Randal will be pursuing an international medical degree and we will spend the first sixteen months at the medical school on Sint Eustatius and after that we don’t know where we’ll be. The US? Back home in Canada? We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it. For now I’m closing the doors at Rebecca Cooper Photography and focusing on all the little details we need to get ready to go and packing up our house. (I will be finishing up two senior sessions that had to be rescheduled due to weather and two family sessions that I previously committed to but after that I will no longer be booking clients)
The good news is we’ll have our computer, my camera and internet access while we’re gone so the blog isn’t going anywhere! I’ll be updating regularly with photos from our adventure and I’m actually looking forward to taking on the challenge of keeping up with my scrapbooking/memory keeping with a VERY limited amount of supplies.  You know I’m all about keeping things simple and I’m excited for the chance to practise what I preach in a VERY real way.
Can’t wait to share this new adventure with you all…

Good luck Rebecca! I have always admired you, and this will be another adventure for you, that makes the rest of us smile, be inspried, and continue to dazzle in the seemingly impossible things you do thus making them possible. You touch and inspire probably far deeper than you realize. You’ll always hold a special place in my heart, you showed me the beauty of simplicity. More than that, you let the world into your life, and heart, and let us watch as you do as you do. I’ll be praying for you all during this exciting new adventure. Keep on being the super amazing little shining star that you are. You radiate light and warmth 🙂

I’ve been thinking about this a lot and I am seriously so excited for you. Truly. And it will be so much easier to do this in this day and age, because all the people who live in your computer will still live in your computer once you get there. Does that make sense? Hope so : )

It’s pretty crazy to pack your life into 10 duffel bags but it can work. We just did that getting to Switzerland for two years.
Best of luck in the coming months!!

What an adventure — best wishes to you and your family. I am so glad that you will continue to post updates to your blog so that we (your fans) can keep up with your new adventure and scrapbooking goodness. I was at crop on Saturday and a friend had brought along an issue of SS that had a picture of one of your scrapbook pages at the beginning of each section — so fun to see so many of your great layouts that I had not seen before. 🙂

I commented on a previous post about how much we have in common. We have one more thing in common. In 2004 my husband and I went to the island of Saba for Medical school. We had one child and one on the way at the time. We now have 4. He is starting his 3rd year of residency.

It really was the best decision we ever made. I would do it over again if I could.

If I can help you prepare in any way please let me know.
    email me @[email protected]
    Congratulations and good luck.

One more thing.. Saba is right across the ocean from Statia. So I am familiar with the surrounding islands.

There used to be a professor on Saba who is now on Statia. He is a phsyc professor. We became great friends.

He was once a member of the church, and even served a mission.

His name is Dr. Cheney. His wife is Deidre. They are both wonderful.

Believe me when I say that I know what you are going through.

I have some tips for putting your whole life in 10 suitcase, except we could only take 4 at the time. We only had 2 adults then.

    Much peace and love,
    Andrea Swenson

    WOW…

we have made a few cross country moves… our most recent to BC a few months ago. When you know it’s the right thing for your family, you have no choice but to walk through the doors that have been opened. I wish you all the best. May your family be kept safe in God’s continuing care while you embark on this new adventure.

I wouldn’t miss those Alberta winters if I were you… we don’t miss them of Ontario… that’s for sure!

Wow, that must have been a huge decision to make! Good luck with the packing and moving!

My BIL is doing an international medical degree and it has been quite the experience and taken them to some very interesting places.

I’m looking forward to seeing photos and hearing about your experiences. It looks like a gorgeous place to live!
