Capturing the Simple Things in 2013

Of all the thousands of photos that I take in a year, the photos of the everyday, simple moments that make up our days are some of the most precious to me. Recording those moments that can so often get lost amidst the busyness of life, is what Simple things Sunday is all about. I’m so thankful to have this weekly tradition to remind me to record and treasure those moments!
Simple things Sunday {a photo link party I host every weekend} is about taking time to photograph the everyday details that make your life unique, beautiful, and special. Each Sunday we gather here to share our photos with each other. To enjoy the beauty that can be found in the ordinary and to be reminded of just how important the simple things are.

I don’t know about you, but I need and appreciate the weekly reminder to focus on the simple joys that surround me each day. The collection of photos that I now have from participating in STS for the past two years are among my most treasured photos.

If you’re new to Simple as That  or have been thinking about joining the Simple things Sunday fun, I’d love to invite you to join us this weekend for our very first STS party of 2013! Don’t forget you can join the party on instagram as well! Post your photos throughout the week using hashtag #thesimplethings and tag me @rebecca_simpleasthat so I can check out your photos!

the simple things: my weekly reminder

A few months ago I was invited to guest post over at the new TOFW blog. It was a huge honor and I was thankful for the opportunity to reflect on my role as a mother and to share a few of my thoughts. My little simple things project came up, so I wanted to share this post with you today. As we come up on one year of {the simple things} I have been thinking a lot about how thankful I am for this weekly photo project…and here’s why.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

As a mother of four ranging in ages from nine years to twenty months, I sometimes catch myself looking ahead with a dreamy kind of look on my face, to the day when the children are older and can do a few more things for themselves. Days that don’t involve poopy diapers, toys strewn all over the living room or sticky dining room chairs.

I have to stop myself in my tracks when I find these thoughts creeping up on me and remind myself that in wishing away the toddler tantrums and the messy house, I’m inadvertently wishing away this precious time with my children that I treasure so much. Being a mother is what I’ve always wanted to be and the joy I get from spending my days with my children is such a blessing in my life.
Why then, can it be so difficult to focus on this perspective on a daily basis? Raising children is not all bubblegum and icecream and involves taking the good times along with the challenging ones. Finding ways to focus on the the simple joys and everyday moments that my children and I share and the memories we are making, has helped me to find more patience and joy in motherhood.

With my camera in hand, I love to capture not only the milestone moments in my children’s lives but the everyday, silly little details that make our story unique. I’ve actually made it a goal each week to photograph one simple joy or simple moment that put a smile on my face. What started out as a fun idea for a photo project has turned into so much more. Looking for and capturing this weekly photo has helped me be more aware of the blessings that surround me each day and in turn has helped me to better appreciate the stage in life I’m at right now.
As I learn to appreciate my life as it is right now, I’m so thankful for gentle reminders to slow down and enjoy life’s moments as they happen. As I read my scriptures, pray for added patience and take photos that capture the simple things that make my life beautiful, I find more appreciation in the everyday.

Thank you so much to everyone who stops by to share their photos each week!
The simple things challenge is something really special to me and it’s hard to believe that it’s coming up on one year since I first started this little photography project!
This weekly reminder to focus on the simple, ordinary moments that make my life beautiful has been such a blessing…especially on days when finding those simple joys feels like a challenge.
for the love of everyday
Normal day, let me be aware of the treasure you are. Let me learn from you, love you, bless you before you depart. Let me not pass you by in search of some rare and perfect tomorrow. Let me hold you while i may, for it may not always be so. One day i shall dig my nails into the earth, or bury my face in the pillow, or stretch myself taut, or raise my hands to the sky and want, more than all in the world, your return.
{Mary Jean Iron}
The quest to appreciate, treasure and seek out the everyday blessings that surround me each day is what the simple things challenge is about for me. I’m planning a fun one year simple things celebration and would love to hear your thoughts on what the simple things challenge has meant to you!  You can email me at cooper{dot}rr{at}gmail{dot}com. :)

We spent some time at the botanical garden with friends last week and Alivia couldn’t get enough of all the beautiful flowers. The flowers that grow here on the island are so gorgeous!!

This was the scene at the kitchen sink the other night after dinner (brother was in the dining room sweeping the floor). Baby girl couldn’t resist a sink full of water & Addie was so eager to help dry dishes. Love those (somewhat rare) moments when they all happily work together. ;)
I loved so many of the photos you guys shared this past week!
This photo from Shannon is beyond sweet!
Love this one from Alisha!

I found this lemon loaf recipe over at a pretty life in the suburbs and have made it twice this week it’s so delicious. I appreciate a recipe with a simple list of ingredients that can easily be found on the island & that  tastes super yummy to boot! This one’s definately going in our family’s file of favorite recipes!
