June was an eventful month for us, how was it for you? Lot’s of end of the year activities to attend, Father’s day…not to mention all the other regular, everyday stuff.

1. We watched Carson play soccer.
2. We said good-bye to preschool, 1st grade and 3rd grade teachers.
3. We celebrated Father’s Day.
4. Emily performed at her piano recital and did such a good job!
5. We skyped with family.
6. We celebrated Addie’s preschool graduation.

May was CRAZY around here! Full of surprises and time with family and more surprises! Here’s a just a few highlights from last month…
1. My sister Ashley & her husband Caleb flew to Statia for a surprise visit and what a surprise it was! My sister took video of the minute I first saw her walk into our house and…well, lets just say there was lots {and lots} of screaming & a few tears! It was the best surprise of my life! I love that sister of mine and have missed her so much while we’ve gone!
2. We did so much with the sis and the brother in law while they were here! Hiking, visiting the botanical garden, going to the beach and going to the beach again. Caleb & Ashley went out snorkeling with Randal one day and got to swim with this cute turtle!
3. Spending time with my sister! Highlight of May for sure!
4. The kids loved showing Aunt Ashley & Uncle Caleb around Fort Oranje! We even picked some fresh mangos while we were there & enjoyed THE yummiest fresh mango + coconut smoothie for breakfast one morning.

5. Ok, the sister visiting was definately a highlight of May, but so was the surprise weekend trip to St. Maarten that my husband planned for us!!! My sister and her husband watched the kiddos for us while we got away for a few days and it was SOOOOO nice. Definately a much needed break. :) One of my favorite photos from our weekend getaway: Randal at Maho Beach watching the airplanes fly in.

I can’t wait to see your photos! :)

For those of you finding it tricky to narrow down your favorite photos to only 5 or 10 each month, I whipped up this 12X12 collage just for you! Use as is, crop it smaller or even create a two page spread and you could fit as many as 22 photos from your month in there. You can download the 12X12 collage HERE. Enjoy! :)

I definately find it a process to pick out my five photos each month but I’m determined to keep this as easy as possible and for me, less photos to edit, crop and fit into a collage = the simplest thing right now. Some months I wish I could fit more in but, meh, no biggie. I’m planning to combine my collages together into an album one day that will include point form journaling of the events from each month. The photos will serve as an overview, with the written list being a more detailed account of each months happenings.

April was a full month for us. With exams for my husband & Easter activities it felt like we were extra busy. Busy with things like…

1. Emily & Carson’s school memorization program at the Seventh Day Adventist church.
{The kids attend the Lynch Plantation Seventh Day Adventist school here on the island.}
2. A beautiful hike to a place called Venus Bay. It rained off and on during our hike & we were soaked by the time we got back but that wasn’t necessarily a bad thing. The weather is starting to get hot here already {today the temperature is 29 degrees Celsius and the humidity is 70%. Yikes!} & the cool rain was a welcome relief from the heat!
3. Addie’s preschool had a kite day & it was the highlight of Addie’s life. It was the first time she’d flown a kite & she loved it!
4. It was so much fun watching all the kids enjoy our small family Easter egg hunt, but especially watching Alivia search for eggs this year. Last Easter she was only a few months old so this was her first time taking part in all the Easter fun!
5. The kids had lots of fun dyeing Easter eggs & rolling them down the hill
near our house a few days later.
If you’ve created a photo collage of your month in photos for April we’d sure love to see! Leave a comment on todays post with a link to your collage so we can all check it out!

A Month in Photos

At the beginning of 2010 I started this monthly photo project and I loved it so much I’ve decided to continue on with the same “month in photos” idea for 2011. Quick and simple to put together, this scaled down approach to project 365 has been the perfect solution for me.

Want to join me this year in capturing each month in photos?

You can download the new template I created for 2011 or use the one from this year. At the end of each month pick your photos, make your collage and share a link here! It would be so fun to see everyone’s collages each month! (Here’s an example of the 2011 collage template in action using some of my newest favorite photos taken last week by my daughter Emily.)

This years collage includes 5 photos and the size is 6″ X 11″ (which can easily be customized), perfect for a landscape mini album. Simply print off your collages, punch a hole in the upper left corner and at the end of the year put all 12 pages together with a binder ring. If you wanted to include more photos you can easily create a two page spread or, if you feel like it, change up each months layout by simply downloading all the different template combinations here.
For those of you might find it tricky to narrow down your favorite photos to only 5 or 10 each month, I whipped up this 12X12 collage just for you! Use as is, crop it smaller or even create a two page spread and you could fit as many as 22 photos from your month in there.
You can download the 12X12 collage HERE as well. Enjoy! :)

Customize the background to any color you’d like or switch up the fonts then add your photos to the templates easily using clipping masks (find a simple to follow tutorial on using clipping masks here). Not up for trying out clipping masks, simply crop & add your own photos over top the designated black photo areas. Use control-T to adjust the size of your photo. By holding down the shift key while adjusting the size of your photo it will remain in proportion without becoming distorted.
You’ll have to let me know if you’re on board for ‘a month in photos’ during 2011 and check back here at the end of each month to link up and share your collages! This will be so FUN!
Happy New Year everyone!

Monthly Photos: November

1. Emily heading out to go snorkeling with the Junior Rangers group she meets with every Wednesday afterschool. 2. Carson at Zeelandia beach. 3. We moved – loving all the space we have and our fun backyard! 4. Carson had a birthday, can’t believe he’s already six. 5. This girl is getting too big. 6. Having fun at the Statia day celebrations. 7. The kids playing with the touch-me-nots  (liking this name better than shame-lady-shames.) 8. This pretty princess is loving the birthday present Grandma sent her last month. 9. Friday craft day. 10. Our new kitchen. 11. The big kids (baby on my back) at Zeelandia beach. 12. Beautiful view of the Golden Rock Regatta.
I can’t believe it’s been almost 1 year already since I started creating my monthly photo collages!
It’s been a lot of fun putting these together each month and a great alternative to project 365 that I took on in 2009. I’m looking forward to designing a new collage template for 2011 and continuing to
document our year month by month in photos.
If you want to download the template for my 2010 monthly photo collages you can download it HERE.

My Escape: Island Living in the Dutch Caribbean

I’ve been reflecting a lot lately on the experiences we’ve had on this little island over the last 16 months. With only 14 days left until we leave I’m such a mix of emotions about going home. On the one hand I’m beyond excited! Excited to see our families, excited to walk into a grocery store where I can buy all the bananas I want and yogurt cups for less than $1.50 each! How cool will that be!?
I’m also a bit sad to leave this pretty place where we’ve created so many special family memories. Sure, there are things I’m not going to miss for a second -  the ants currently invading my kitchen come to mind – but our time here has been such an incredible experience, one that we’re going to treasure for years and I guess it’s only natural to feel some sadness at seeing this adventure come to an end.

I’m also feeling a touch of nervousness about going home, which I didn’t really anticipate. I’m nervous for the kids and how they’re going to transition back into school in Canada. I’m nervous that we’re going to freeze {it dipped down to 26 degrees Celsius last night and I was putting on a sweater!? What is that?} I’m nervous about the plane trip with a two year old and I’m just feeling nervous about heading back to reality in general.
Living here has been a bit of an escape for me and I’m reluctant to dive right back into the life I was living before we came to Statia. Leaving behind thoughts of the medical issues I’d been dealing with, taking a break from all the doctors appointments and putting aside my fears of the unknown, has done so much for my health and I feel like I’m in a much better place now to deal with whatever might come way in the future.
Leaving my photography business and taking some time to just do my own thing has been so freeing and I’ve fallen in love with photography all over again during our time here. Without the stress of client deadlines and the expectation of perfect photos, I’ve felt my creativity behind the lens come back to me and taking pictures feels fun again!
Having four kids still keeps me busy, but I’m not functioning at the same crazy pace I was back home before we left and I’m determined to do all I can to maintain the simpler way of life that we’ve embraced here. I’m not too sure how I’m going to do that. It’s probably going to require a few “no’s” on my part and a whole lot of discipline when it comes to collecting “stuff” again. I haven’t done any REAL shopping in 16 months and I’ve already been fighting the urge to make up for lost time. ;)
So many blessings have come into my life as a result of our time here and the changes we’ve experienced over the past 16 months. Even though I’m nervous for what’s to come, I’m also excited to be moving on to the next step in this journey and to take the lessons we’ve learned here home with us.
I’m putting together a post summing up our experiences in the Dutch Caribbean and wondered if you have any questions you’ve been dying to ask me re: life here. If you do, feel free to email me or leave a your question in the comments and I’d be happy to answer what I can.
