simple summer project: sidewalk chalk checkers

The kids and I worked on this little project over the weekend and we had so much fun with it! I've been collecting baby food jar lids for quite some time and finally found a use for them with this sidewalk chalk version of checkers!

To make your own checkers game you'll need:
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

24 baby food jar lids

sandpaper

paint + paintbrushes

sidewalk chalk

Instructions:
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

1. Using sandpaper, roughen the surface of the baby food jar lids so your paint will adhere.

2. Choose your paint colors + start painting the lids. Paint 12 one color and 12 another color.
We used a pencil with a straight pin stuck in the eraser to paint the dots around the edges of our checkers.

3. While the paint dries on your game pieces use sidewalk chalk to draw a checkerboard 8 squares wide by 8 squares tall on an area of sidewalk. We just eyeballed ours, but it would be helpful to use a straight edge to help get the lines straight.

4. When your checkerboard is ready and your game pieces are dry, have fun playing a game of
sidewalk chalk checkers!

Not only was it fun to make our little checkerboard and game peieces, the kids have loved playing checkers with eachother in the yard! Throw in a yummy frozen treat after our outdoor board game and it was the perfect summer afternoon activity!

:)
